NBC will launch the biggest Broadway talent search ever on January 7 with a new competition that will find the leads for the new production of Grease. On Grease: You're the One That I Want!, thousands of hopefuls from around the country will compete for the chance to play ultimate summer lovers Sandy Dumbrowski and Danny Zuko in Grease, which is set to open on Broadway in June 2007.
Hosted by Access Hollywood co-anchor Billy Bush and British stage and TV star Denise Van Outen, Grease: You're the One That I Want! will feature a trio of well-respected judges: Grease co-creator Jim Jacobs, theater producer David Ian and two-time Tony Award winning director/choreographer Kathleen Marshall, who will stage the new production of Grease.
Grease premiered at the Kingston Mines Theater in Chicago in 1971. It opened on Broadway on Valentine's Day, 1972 and ran for almost eight years before closing in 1980. A revival of the show was another long-running hit, playing from May 1994 to January 1998 at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre. Of course, the film version of Grease made it an international sensation that is now one of the most beloved movie musicals ever. Released in the summer of 1978 and starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, the $6 million movie went on to early more than $181 million in the United States.
